Andorra la Vella is one of those quaint Spanish cities that offer the best of natural landscapes to the visitors and locals. Its strategic location at the eastern side of Pyrenees makes it a most favorable sight. The majestic mountains loom splendidly behind Andorra to attract many to its wonderful peaks.
Andorra is near to France; its original name, Andorra la Vella, means ‘Old Andorra’ which is a reference to its ancient origins.
Diversity
Diversity in Andorra gives a variety of offering to the visitors. This city is the Andorra Principality capital with a cosmopolitan population comprising Spaniards, Portuguese, French and local Andorrans. Hence, a varied culture, customs and traditions can be enjoyed at Andorra.
Catalan is spoken commonly although Spanish is the official language but with the diverse cultures in Andorra, it is not surprising that French, Castilian and Portuguese are also spoken.
Andorra la Vella’s diversity attracts many to its site. The picturesque setting of the town makes it attractive and unique. Andorra was formerly named Barri Antic for its many stoned houses and cobbled streets by its first settlers. The town expanded with modern styles although the ancient quarter lies strategically between 2 expanding sections.
New and Old
It is interesting to note that there are old and new structures found side by side or close to one another in Andorra la Vella. The Sant Esteve church sports an antique structure which is a popular tourist attraction. This is an 11th century Romanesque style church which exudes grandeur even in the midst of modern structures.
One can view some intriguing paintings which would fascinate visitors besides the exquisite interior designs of the church. These paintings are really antique art pieces which are greater attractions than the church building itself. Nevertheless, the interior designs have been well preserved to reflect the ancient culture and that particular era’s architectural skills.
There is another interesting ancient monument standing in Andorra today which is the Casa de la Vall, vakantievilla. It was this building which was used as Andorra’s parliament house since 1703. It is called the House of Valley which was originally constructed in the 1580s as a family residence. The Andorran government converted the building to function as the parliament.
The architectural design of the House of Valley is special inside out. One would need to make time to view this unique construction in detail to appreciate its beauty and the skills of the builders of that era.
