Spain is a great place to be for any celebration as there would be no lack of merry making and festivity. There are plenty of public holidays in Spain with the plethora of fiestas and religious festivals celebrated every year.

Spain celebrates many local fiestas stemmed from its rich culture and history besides adhering to the national and international public holidays. Every region holds its own special celebrations throughout the year. Hence, it is not surprising for a tourist to be in a constant celebration mood while visiting Spain.

January festivals

Spaniards start the New Year right with a great bang of festivity. There is plenty of merry making in the streets with music, songs, street parades, competitions and fireworks at night to usher in the New Year. One of the New Year traditions is to finish up 12 grapes before the strike of 12 for good luck.

There is also the Three Kings celebration with children receiving gifts from 3 kings parading the town streets in a beautifully decorated procession.

March festivals

The Semana Santa is a most revered religious festival in Spain where hundreds participate in the solemn processions of Palm Sunday and Easter. The mood is somber on Friday to peak at a most vibrant celebration on Sunday with fireworks, music, songs and merry making.

April festivals

In April, festivals can go on for two weeks with colorful processions, night firework displays, flamenco dancing and bullfights.

June festivals

The San Juan festival sees beach bonfires with hundreds swimming in the sea at midnight to wash away their sins in a symbolic act just like the revered Saint John baptizing his followers.

The Corpus Christi festival is another solemn religious fiesta with a long procession on the streets in honor of Jesus. Holy water is sprinkled over observers and participants along the streets by the participating priests.

August fiestas

The Asuncion festival is an important event to the Catholics who celebrate the ascension of Mary after death.

November festivals

One of the more famous fiestas in November is the All Saints festival where families come together in remembrance of their lost loved ones. Graves are cleaned up and flowers are laid in loving memory of the dead.

December fiestas

There is the Constitution day which is one of Ibiza
and Spain’s national holidays to commemorate the nation’s democratic rule since 1978. The Immaculate Conception fiesta is to commemorate the virgin conception of Jesus.
