Granada is famous for its ancient treasure in the Alhambra; indeed there is no other ancient monument quite like the Alhambra in Spain. It is an epitome of beautiful Moorish architecture set majestically on a hill.
It is easy for the holidaymaker to spend hours discovering the many historical treasures at the Alhambra. This magnificent ancient Citadel has been well preserved for one and all to enjoy its exquisite architectural design.
Colorful History
The history of the impressive Alhambra is colorful as Europe’s best preserved architecture. This exquisite ancient Moorish palace is located in Granada. The Arabic name ‘Alhambra’ means ‘Red Castle’ as noted by its outward appearance. Moorish poets labeled this ancient castle as the pearl among emeralds.
It was originally built as a defense fortress against pirate attacks with the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains at its back. History has it that Sawar ben Hamdun converted the small fort into the currently majestic Alhambra when he identified the strategic location of the castle for defense against the enemy.
A lot of rich Moorish architecture can be seen in the Alhambra where Moorish kings ruled during the 14th century. The Alhambra served as a royal Moorish residence during the Nasrid dynasty with splendid Arabesques architecture.
However, the Re-Conquest Christians came in 1492 to take over the city. Renovations were done on the Alhambra to reflect Renaissance style and rule by King Charles V.
In 1812, the French destroyed two of Alhambra’s towers. Napoleon had wanted to have the whole Alhambra demolished but fate preserved the structure. Although an earthquake rocked the Alhambra in 1821, fantastic restoration works were undertaken in 1828 by Jose Contreras to ensure the Alhambra’s grandeur till today.
Beautiful interior
The Alhambra and vakantiehuisje spanje contains many beautiful sections in its interior. The Lions Patio is a spacious courtyard holding 124 marble columns that form a gallery with beautiful arches. There are splendid Arabesques art pieces on each arch with twelve white marble sculptured lions at the center of the courtyard. This is the Fountain of the Lions.
Inside is the largest reception hall used during ancient times called the Ambassador Hall. It sports an ornate ceiling with tiles and pictures of heavens in blue, gold and white designs.
The two Sisters Hall are decorated with large smooth marble slabs and dome ceiling with an indoor fountain. The ceiling is most unique with thousands of honeycomb cells to make this Moorish architecture so unique in its design.
